Featured Restoration Projects Performed on Steinway Pianos
1880 Steinway Rosewood Model B 85 Grand Piano Restoration
This is a stunningly beautiful example of an early Steinway Model B, which was produced in 1880 with only 85 notes.
This particular piano’s exterior was in very bad condition, and the lower leg crowns were completely chewed off and missing—most likely from animals and/or rodents. New crowns were fabricated and installed, and a completely new finish of the gorgeous Rosewood veneer was applied, along with extensive veneer repairs.
In addition to the thorough belly work involving a dimensionally duplicated, solid spruce soundboard with all new bridge caps, and new Bolduc lumber core pinblock, all new Steinway factory action parts and period correct custom made hammers were installed. The original keyset was maintained and completely refurbished mainly due to the original pristine ebony and ivory keys that were still present.
This piano is an excellent example of Restoration of a 143 year old instrument to “as-new” condition, ready for 100 more years of service!
1916 Hamburg German Steinway Model B Grand Piano Restoration
This extraordinary 1916 Hamburg German Steinway Model B grand piano came to our studio for an internal restoration and the installation of a PianoDisc IQ player piano system. It is representative of the Biedermeier style of furniture popular in northern Europe from circa 1825-1845. Surrounding the body of the case are intricate scenes, classic design, and exquisite marquetry. The incredible attention to detail and inlay throughout the entire cabinet of this instrument is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of days gone by. It is truly one of a kind!
1880’s Steinway and Sons Style 3 Art Case Grand
Here is an especially stunning 1880’s Steinway Style 3 Art Case we refurbished many years ago. It is a truly unique example of the artistry, skill, and capabilities of the craftsmen from generations ago. We couldn’t help taking plenty of pictures of this beautiful instrument so we can treat you to a good selection in the gallery below.
Vintage Steinway and Sons Model A1 Grand Piano
Here we see very thorough belly work on the first Model A Steinway design…the A1 6’1″ piano. This piano includes new pinblock, new soundboard with bridge cap, and rim and case repairs. Steinway developed 2 more versions of the model A culminating with the A3, at 6’4″ long. Note this early design incorporates a third bridge to accommodate 9 notes in the tenor section of the piano that utilize bass strings (2 double and 7 trichords). This scale design has some inherent drawbacks and was quickly replaced with the A2 that removed the third bridge.
Thank you for bringing my 1969 Steinway M piano back to life! When I was referred to you for the overhaul that it needed—including work to the soundboard, bridges, agraffes, lyre, damper tray, pedals and trapwork, plus producing and entirely new keyset with current modern key spacing, new Steinway factory action parts and German hammers, strings, felts and other parts, not to mention the cosmetic touch up—I knew that I would be in good hands but I didn’t realize that I would be in GREAT hands! Your depth of knowledge, years of experience, attention to details, and sensitivity to all issues contributed to making a great final product—a fully revitalized and up to date instrument. I couldn’t be happier.
